Tomorrow never came was composed after meeting with mezzo – soprano Janet Hopkins. Janet was doing a weeklong remembrance of the Terezin Ghetto (Theresienstadt) in Columbia SC, and had commissioned me to write her a piece. We decided to use poems written by children who were in the ghetto.
Many musicians performed in the ghetto, and strings were the most commonly available instruments, so it seemed appropriate that I should write for string trio to accompany the human voice.
